Actors Who Make Villains Fascinating

A memorable villain is more than a striking costume or a notorious name. These actors find different ways to make a dangerous character hold the screen: an apparently reasonable voice, a gracious smile, a sudden change of rhythm or a need for control that leaks through the manners. The selection leans towards films and television since the 1990s, with a few older performances worth comparing. Start with Rickman and Close for social polish, Staunton and Fletcher for oppressive politeness, or Ledger and Kingsley for volatility. The pleasure is in the performance, not approval of the character; the entries point to useful starting roles without recounting their endings.
