The Zone of Interest (2023)

Listen beyond the garden. While the camera observes the Auschwitz commandant's household, machinery, distant shouts and gunfire keep another world present across the wall. Johnnie Burn's sound work makes the domestic image impossible to accept on the family's terms. The violence is often outside the picture, but hearing it is profoundly distressing. This is the starkest choice here for understanding how an apparently calm frame can contain a moral refusal to look.
