The Conversation (1974)

A surveillance recording becomes more troubling each time an expert filters and replays it. Behind the visible machinery and Harry Caul's anxious face, fragments of voices ask you to reconstruct an encounter you cannot securely understand. Walter Murch makes listening an act of interpretation rather than a route to certainty. Follow the emphasis as carefully as the words; the pleasure is realising how much an apparently objective recording can depend on the listener.
