Actors Who Make Ordinary People Compelling

A job, an awkward visit, a conversation that goes slightly wrong: these performers find enough drama in everyday life to hold a film together. The choices favour recognisable behaviour over showy transformations, with starting points in British social dramas, American independent films and Japanese and South Korean cinema. Ordinary does not mean uneventful or emotionally easy. Some characters face poverty, bereavement or severe tragedy, while others simply want company or a more satisfying day. Begin with Happy-Go-Lucky, Paterson or Before Sunrise for a lighter route; the individual entries identify the more demanding films. Shared titles also offer useful comparisons between contrasting ways of making a person feel lived-in.
