Moving the 1956 small-town premise to San Francisco lets the 1978 film make alienation disturbingly plausible before anyone is replaced. Professional reassurance and self-help language already sound slightly impersonal. Sutherland, Adams, Goldblum and Nimoy give the social circle competing kinds of confidence. I favour the richer urban unease and soundscape, while the earlier film remains the cleaner sprint.
