Lois Smith
Born
The scientist Iris Hineman in Minority Report (2002) and Sister Sarah Joan in Lady Bird (2017) are Smith. One offers unsettling knowledge; the other recognises possibility in an impatient teenager. Her gently inquisitive manner makes both encounters feel like conversations with someone whose life experience exceeds the main character's immediate concerns.

June Squibb
Born
Squibb's Kate in Nebraska (2013) can puncture a sentimental family moment with devastating bluntness. Thelma (2024) moves her into the centre of a comic pursuit after a phone scam. It is an inviting next watch for anyone who remembers Nebraska's supporting performance and wants to see that determined presence carry the story.

Bill Camp
The Night Of's detective Dennis Box and The Queen's Gambit's chess-playing caretaker Mr. Shaibel are Camp. Both observe more than they say, but their attention has very different consequences. The Queen's Gambit offers the warmer introduction; The Night Of gives his patient, difficult-to-read presence a central place in a criminal investigation.

Michael Stuhlbarg
Born
Larry Gopnik, the increasingly bewildered professor in A Serious Man (2009), and the father in Call Me by Your Name (2017) are Stuhlbarg. Watch the shift from a man searching for answers to one trying to make room for his son's experience. These are especially good introductions to the difference between being articulate and being understood.

David Costabile
Born
Breaking Bad's Gale Boetticher and Billions' Mike 'Wags' Wagner could scarcely advertise themselves more differently. Costabile gives the chemist an earnest, almost fussy enthusiasm, then makes the financial operator exuberantly abrasive. Knowing that these are the same actor is a useful invitation to notice posture, rhythm and social confidence rather than just a familiar face.

Jared Harris
Born
Harris plays Lane Pryce, the financially minded outsider in Mad Men, and scientist Valery Legasov in Chernobyl. His carefully controlled speech suits men trying to be heard within powerful institutions. Mad Men allows the tensions to accumulate across an ensemble; Chernobyl is the shorter, much harsher route into his ability to communicate pressure without constant display.
