A Brighter Summer Day (1991)
Movie
Released
237 minutes, complete restored version. A teenager's life opens into family displacement, school hierarchies, gang loyalties and the uneasy public world of 1960s Taiwan. Edward Yang makes rooms, streets and casual conversations accumulate historical pressure around private mistakes. The investment is substantial, and the violence is painful. What earns it is the sense that no individual act can be understood without the surrounding lives and institutions.
