The Irishman (2019)
Movie

209 minutes, original release. The labour of a mob career gradually gives way to the time left after that career has consumed its relationships. Martin Scorsese lets repetition become part of the argument: a favour, an errand and an act of obedience can all close off another possible life. The digital ageing is sometimes distracting, but the final movement earns its quiet by making earlier activity look newly empty.
