The Devil's Advocate (1997)

Al Pacino's John Milton understands the pleasure of being listened to. His conversational ease slowly opens into extravagant verbal performance, giving this glossy legal-horror film a persuasive advocate for its own excess. The plot can become ponderous as it explains its design, but his timing makes another speech an attraction. Charlize Theron's anguish gives the extravagance an emotional cost rather than leaving Pacino entirely unopposed.
