Nani's difficulty keeping a job while caring for Lilo gives this alien comedy a second centre. Her impatience is no longer simply an obstacle to a child's freedom; it comes from love under financial pressure and the threat of separation. Lilo and Stitch remain gloriously unruly. The older sister's exhausted attempts to hold a household together make their definition of family feel earned.
