Joy's determination to keep Riley cheerful can look less helpful after you have tried to support someone through a difficult move. The film gives sadness a social function: it can make a need visible instead of merely interrupting the fun. Its bright control-room comedy is family entertainment, but the invitation to stop managing every feeling into happiness lands with unusual force in adulthood.
