The revealing sunglasses turn advertising into blunt orders, but John Carpenter also gives the joke a stubborn physical weight. Roddy Piper's drifter takes time to notice how the city is organised, and the notoriously prolonged alley fight makes persuasion hilariously exhausting. Its following makes sense when the political cartoon and blue-collar action movie click together.
