Heathers (1989)

The school hierarchy speaks in a heightened, vicious language that makes ordinary teen-film reassurance impossible. Winona Ryder keeps a recognisable unease inside the cartoon, while Christian Slater makes rebellion dangerously seductive. The appeal is its refusal to let either popularity or outsider status confer innocence. Suicide, murder and cruelty are central to its dark comedy.
