Jack Burton speaks like the hero while the people around him do much of the competent work. That mismatch gives Kurt Russell's swagger a comic afterlife beyond the monster fights and underground magic. Enjoy it as a loud, knowingly overconfident adventure, while recognising that its jumble of Chinese mysticism belongs to Hollywood fantasy.
