John Carter (2012)

The appealing part is how seriously Andrew Stanton takes an old-fashioned planetary adventure: creatures, rival loyalties and a displaced hero discovering a new physical world. The exposition is heavy and the naming can be a hurdle, but the leaping movement and Tars Tarkas's presence give the place a welcome sense of play. Choose it for earnest pulp, not a brisk modern opening.
