Joseph Kosinski gives the maintenance stations and empty landscapes a strikingly clean visual order, with M83's music supplying a pulse beneath the solitude. The borrowed science-fiction machinery explains the mixed reception, but the lonely work routine is worth inhabiting before the revelations accelerate. A good choice when a handsome, reflective atmosphere matters more than originality of premise.
