Tom Hanks makes the effort of remaining composed part of Andrew Beckett's performance in court, while Denzel Washington allows his lawyer's assumptions to become visible. Their relationship is more interesting than a simple lesson delivered by an exemplary victim. The film's legal melodrama is conventional, but the actors give its conversations about illness, prejudice and professional dignity a specific human friction.
