Samuel L. Jackson gives the father's fear and anger a force that Matthew McConaughey's persuasive speeches cannot entirely contain. Sandra Bullock and the surrounding ensemble make the defence's work feel socially exposed. The courtroom rhetoric is gripping, but its treatment of racial violence and vigilante justice is deliberately contentious. That tension deserves attention alongside the star turns.
