Do the Right Thing (1989)
Movie
Released
Do the Right Thing missed the Best Picture nominations at the 1990 ceremony; Driving Miss Daisy won. Spike Lee's film was nominated for Original Screenplay and Danny Aiello for Supporting Actor. The Best Picture argument is the neighbourhood's density: jokes, resentments, music and competing claims gather heat without reducing everyone to a position in a debate. The 1989 release is the list's earlier exception, included because its relevant Oscar argument begins the following decade.

About Do the Right Thing
Sal is the Italian owner of a pizzeria in Brooklyn. A neighborhood local, Buggin' Out, becomes upset when he sees that the pizzeria's Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. Buggin' Out believes a pizzeria in a black neighborhood should showcase black actors, but Sal disagrees. The wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate to Buggin' Out and to other people in the neighborhood, and tensions rise.
