GoodFellas (1990)
Movie
Released
At the 1991 ceremony, GoodFellas was nominated for Best Picture and lost to Dances With Wolves. Scorsese's film makes belonging feel intoxicating before its rhythms become a trap: the camera, narration and popular music put attraction and disgust in constant negotiation. That integration is the case for choosing it over the winner's expansive historical drama. Joe Pesci's Supporting Actor win also matters to the record; this was a lost Best Picture contest, not a film shut out entirely.
