Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Movie
Released
Brokeback Mountain was a Best Picture nominee at the 2006 ceremony, where Crash won. Ang Lee did win Directing, so the dispute is specifically the top film award. The argument for Brokeback lies in its treatment of time: short encounters accumulate into a life shaped by what cannot be openly sustained. Landscape, performance and domestic detail all serve that pressure. Crash favours an intersecting social panorama; the preference here is for an intimate structure whose absences keep expanding.
