Malcolm X (1992)
Movie
Released
Denzel Washington was nominated for Actor in a Leading Role for Malcolm X at the 1993 ceremony and lost to Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. Washington's case is the way an evolving public voice remains connected to a changing private person. Different phases of Malcolm's life alter his rhythm, gaze and relation to a room, without feeling like separate impersonations. Pacino's bravura is easy to recognise; Washington makes transformation itself the sustained dramatic event.
