What's Love Got to Do with It (1993)

Angela Bassett received an Actress in a Leading Role nomination at the 1994 ceremony; Holly Hunter won for The Piano. Bassett's Tina Turner is compelling in the distance between stage attack and guarded private movement. Her physical confidence is something the film shows being won and defended, rather than a star quality assumed from the beginning. That makes this a rich disagreement between two very different embodied performances. The film's domestic violence is severe.
