Samuel L. Jackson was nominated for Actor in a Supporting Role in 1995 and lost to Martin Landau in Ed Wood. This is a disputed result, not a missed nomination. Jules's verbal authority makes the early scenes crackle, but Jackson's ability to let certainty become doubt is the deeper case. The diner conversation changes the meaning of his earlier theatrical menace. Landau's transformation has its own powerful argument; Jackson offers the more surprising internal turn.
