Pam Grier was not an Actress in a Leading Role nominee at the 1998 ceremony, where Helen Hunt won for As Good as It Gets. Jackie Brown makes her alertness to money, age and other people's assumptions part of the suspense. Grier can let a pause suggest that Jackie is calculating a different conversation from the one everyone else thinks they are having. The understated attraction with Robert Forster adds another register without turning her into a reward for somebody else's story.
