Till (2022)

Danielle Deadwyler did not receive an Actress in a Leading Role nomination for Till at the 2023 ceremony; Michelle Yeoh won for Everything Everywhere All at Once. As Mamie Till-Mobley, Deadwyler makes public composure look like a choice made under immense pressure. The effort to look, speak and insist on being heard gives the film a centre beyond its historical explanation. The case is strongest in that controlled attention, while the racist murder and disturbing images make the viewing deeply painful.
