Best Crime Movies of All Time

A ranked route through heists, investigations, criminal families, noir and the institutions that decide whose violence counts as lawful. I favour compelling character choices, a strong sense of place and filmmaking that makes power visible. Start with Double Indemnity for compact noir, Heat for a full-scale modern crime drama, or Infernal Affairs for tense economy. These are adult films with very different emotional demands: the entries identify sexual violence, child harm, extreme brutality or sustained bleakness when those would change the choice. Political crime and courtroom uncertainty belong beside the gangsters here.
