European Actors Who Built Careers Outside English

These actors have built substantial bodies of work in French, Italian, Spanish, German, Danish, Finnish, Polish, Czech, Romanian, Greek, Portuguese, Hungarian, Russian and other languages. Some also work in English, and some of the films here are multilingual. The focus is on the careers and collaborations that make their work rewarding without an English-language breakthrough serving as the destination. Each entry offers a way in through particular performances. There is room for Carmen Maura's comic volatility, Kati Outinen's spareness, Ivan Trojan's troubled authority and Luminița Gheorghiu's sharply different forms of care. The selection brings together established stars and less familiar names across generations. It is an invitation to follow an actor through several films, listening to the original performances where possible, rather than treating a whole country as one kind of cinema.
