Jacki Weaver's Smurf gives family affection a terrifying claim on obedience. Ben Mendelsohn's Pope supplies a different pressure, a restless presence that makes an ordinary domestic room feel difficult to leave. Animal Kingdom earns its place through those competing temperatures inside one criminal household. Choose it for the unease of love used as leverage, with a young protagonist whose need for family makes every offer of protection complicated.
