City of God (2002)

Leandro Firmino's Li'l Zé makes control of territory inseparable from the demand that people recognise him. The energy of City of God does not cancel the fear around that appetite: children and bystanders bear the cost of the contest for status. The character is unforgettable because the film gives his power a surrounding community rather than treating it as a private spectacle. Expect a fast, crowded crime story with especially distressing violence involving young people.
