Oldboy (2003)

Yoo Ji-tae's Lee Woo-jin brings immaculate self-possession to a revenge story whose other central figure is visibly battered by confusion. His quiet, carefully arranged world makes the imbalance of knowledge feel like a form of ownership. The 2003 South Korean Oldboy is the choice for viewers prepared for an elaborate, deeply cruel puzzle. The reason behind that control must remain unspoilt; sexual violence, extreme bodily harm and traumatic revelations make it a particularly harsh watch.
