Heath Ledger's Joker keeps changing the social register of an encounter, mixing apparent clumsiness, insinuation and sudden purpose. The Dark Knight makes that disruption a problem for police, organised crime and Batman at once, which is why this superhero film belongs in a crime selection. The performance is the attraction; the schemes are cruel tests imposed on other people, rather than persuasive moral instruction. Expect intense threat and a substantial, crowded story around the confrontations.

Batman raises the stakes in his war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the streets. The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham as the Joker.
