Hans Gruber can make a request sound like the agenda item in a well-run meeting. Alan Rickman's measured courtesy gives the robbery leader an authority that Bruce Willis's battered John McClane has to keep improvising against. Willis supplies the physical ordeal; Rickman supplies the dangerous pleasure of watching somebody remain composed while the plan changes. For sheer command of a room, the antagonist has the edge.
