Imelda Staunton's Dolores Umbridge uses a teacher's bright voice as a method of refusing another person's reality. Each tidy smile makes Harry's justified anger easier for her to label as bad behaviour. Daniel Radcliffe plays the resistance; Staunton makes bureaucracy itself feel personally vindictive. She is the film's immediate institutional antagonist even though Voldemort remains the larger enemy. Familiarity with the earlier Potter story helps, and the school punishment scenes are deliberately upsetting.
