Gary Oldman's voice gives Lord Shen a cultivated impatience that the peacock's immaculate animation makes even sharper. A graceful movement can end in a snap of anger, keeping his command of the frame more brittle than Po's open-hearted effort. The villain's fear of what he cannot control gives the sequel's conflict its pressure. Jack Black remains enormously likeable, but Shen's elegant panic is the image and rhythm that linger. The family story includes persecution and traumatic loss.
