Batman (1989)
Movie
Released
Jack Nicholson's Joker treats criminality as an exhibition that Gotham has been invited to admire. His delighted pauses and expansive gestures make the museum sequence feel like a performance within the film. Michael Keaton's Batman is deliberately watchful and withheld, which gives Nicholson nearly all the room to spend. The preference is for that disruptive theatrical rhythm, rather than a claim that the quiet hero has been miscast.
