Batman Returns (1992)

Danny DeVito's Penguin makes a public plea for belonging coexist with appetite, resentment and grotesque self-display. That struggle is more unstable to watch than Batman's familiar task of restoring order. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman is an equally formidable presence, but Penguin is the unambiguous villain chosen here: his political performance makes Gotham's willingness to be entertained part of the threat. The film's cruelty and grotesque imagery are harsher than its comic-book outline suggests.
