The selection process in this Brazilian Portuguese-language drama promises a tiny minority an escape from deprivation. Tests and official explanations turn a political arrangement into something that looks like an objective measure of personal worth. The competition is more overt than Lumon's employment rituals, but both stories make procedures reveal the people who designed them. Its four-season run offers a longer, more directly class-conscious route.
