Counterpart (2017)

Counterpart
TV Show
8.0/10on IMDb
First aired
Howard Silk discovers that the bureaucracy employing him conceals another version of his world, and another version of himself. J. K. Simmons makes the difference between the two men feel like an argument about choices rather than a visual trick. The office protocols acquire intimate consequences, much as they do in Severance. Its two-season run was cancelled; the pleasure is in the people those rules have produced.

Homecoming (2018)

Julia Roberts's apparently reassuring rehabilitation workplace is full of conversations whose purpose changes as more information arrives. Start with the 2018 first season: its short episodes and controlled framing turn professional courtesy into a source of unease. Memory is something an organisation can manage, while the people doing the managing still have to live with themselves. The second season changes the lead perspective.

Devs (2020)

Devs
TV Show
7.6/10on IMDb
First aired
A software engineer investigates a secret division of her employer after her boyfriend disappears. Alex Garland makes the campus feel both inviting and unnervingly devotional, with Nick Offerman's founder at its centre. The connection to Severance is the corporate permission to investigate other people's lives. This limited series is slower, more solemn and more preoccupied with determinism than office comedy.

Maniac (2018)

Maniac
TV Show
7.6/10on IMDb
First aired
A pharmaceutical trial promises to repair two strangers' lives, then sends them through a succession of invented worlds. Emma Stone and Jonah Hill supply the vulnerable human continuity beneath the changing genres. The retro equipment and dubious clinical assurances should appeal to a Lumon enthusiast, but the deeper link is the inadequacy of a technical solution to loneliness and grief.

Mrs. Davis (2023)

by tv_binger  •
Mrs. Davis
TV Show
7.3/10on IMDb
First aired
A nun sets out to destroy an algorithm that seems to have made itself indispensable. Betty Gilpin gives the increasingly absurd quest a stubborn emotional centre, turning the question of freely chosen purpose into something funny and personal. This is a much louder comic adventure than Severance, with religious imagery and extravagant detours. Try it for the human resistance to an apparently benevolent system.

Lodge 49 (2018)

Lodge 49
TV Show
7.6/10on IMDb

The gentler detour: an adrift ex-surfer finds company and possible hidden meaning inside a shabby fraternal lodge. Around him, ordinary work and debt make belonging feel materially important. The rituals and doors may attract a Severance viewer, but the generosity towards struggling people is the stronger connection. AMC's low-rated, critically admired series ended after two seasons with larger mysteries still open.

George can remember a world reset that everybody around him has forgotten. The organisation recruiting him claims to protect humanity, but its rules force him to weigh an intimate loss against the authorised version of events. That institutional ownership of a person's experience supplies the connection. Expect a faster thriller with action and relationship drama; cancellation after two seasons leaves a major cliffhanger.

The Institute (2025)

The Institute
TV Show
6.7/10on IMDb
First aired
Stephen King's 2025 television adaptation takes its institutional horror into a facility holding children with unusual abilities. Luke Ellis has to learn what its routines and apparently reasonable adults are concealing. It is a more direct captivity thriller than Severance, with young people's resistance carrying the story. The useful resemblance is the language of care being used to make exploitation sound necessary.

Dr. Brain (2021)

by tv_binger  •
Dr. Brain
TV Show
6.7/10on IMDb
First aired
A neuroscientist's attempt to investigate a family tragedy through other people's memories makes a supposedly precise procedure dangerously intimate. The Korean-language series lets borrowed impressions unsettle the investigator's sense of himself. Its horror imagery is more explicit than Severance's office dread, but the connection between invasive science, grief and an unstable identity makes this a particularly close international choice.

TV Show

The selection process in this Brazilian Portuguese-language drama promises a tiny minority an escape from deprivation. Tests and official explanations turn a political arrangement into something that looks like an objective measure of personal worth. The competition is more overt than Lumon's employment rituals, but both stories make procedures reveal the people who designed them. Its four-season run offers a longer, more directly class-conscious route.
