Together (2025)

Moving in together becomes a bodily nightmare rather than a charming milestone. Dave Franco and Alison Brie make dependence feel intimate before the flesh starts making its own decisions. The physical grotesquerie is the obvious first-date hurdle; the sharper one is being invited to discuss where commitment ends and the loss of a separate self begins.

Materialists (2025)

Celine Song's matchmaker treats compatibility as a calculation involving money, appearance and social standing. That makes a neat trap for two people quietly assessing each other over dinner afterwards. The film offers more than a glossy romantic triangle, including discussion of sexual assault. Choose it only if an early conversation about what somebody is worth sounds stimulating rather than mortifying.

A missing wife and her husband's increasingly unstable public image turn intimate knowledge into a source of menace. Fincher makes watching people perform a convincing relationship darkly entertaining. On an introductory date, though, the pleasure comes attached to manipulation, sexual violence references and a startlingly bloody scene. The post-film conversation can become an impromptu interrogation of what each of you considers believable.

Blue Valentine (2010)

The early attraction is persuasive enough to make the later estrangement hurt. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling show how the same gesture can change meaning once affection has become obligation. Its frank sex and increasingly raw exchanges make this a demanding way to begin imagining a shared future. The artistry is in precisely the discomfort that a breezy first date may not need.

Marriage Story (2019)

Two people who know each other extraordinarily well discover how efficiently that knowledge can wound. Baumbach leaves room for jokes, kindness and conflicting practical needs, which makes the divorce feel more recognisable rather than less painful. The extended arguments are the awkward attraction here. It is quite a commitment to discuss separation, custody and sacrifice before you have agreed on a second coffee.

A hotel gives single people a deadline to find a partner, turning compatibility into an absurdly coercive exercise. The deadpan humour is a marvellous conversation starter for the right pair. It also comes with cruel rituals, unsettling sex and animal death. Asking your date which small trait should justify a lifelong match may stop feeling like a harmless question surprisingly quickly.

Closer (2004)

The attractive strangers are articulate, curious and extremely capable of making intimacy unpleasant. Mike Nichols gives their interrogations enough wit that you may laugh before noticing how brutal the question was. Sexual jealousy and exceptionally frank language leave little room for light small talk afterwards. A strong choice for discussing honesty's limits, if you really want to start there.

The Piano Teacher (2001)

Isabelle Huppert makes a tightly controlled musician's private life fiercely uncomfortable to observe. Haneke refuses to turn sexual disclosure into an easy moment of liberation or romantic understanding. Explicit sexual material, self-destructive behaviour and sexual violence make this an especially poor surprise choice. Its precision rewards serious attention, but neither person should have to discover the other chose it as a casual romance.

Force Majeure (2014)

A moment during an avalanche unsettles a husband's account of himself, then keeps returning in exquisitely uncomfortable conversations. The snowy holiday setting cannot soften the scrutiny of courage and self-protection. The comedy is very dry, and the argument invites both viewers to imagine their own response. That can be fascinating once a little trust already exists.

The Invitation (2016)

Will arrives at his former partner's dinner party with a new girlfriend and an excellent reason to feel uneasy. Kusama lets grief, social pressure and apparent hospitality pull against one another. The slow-building menace is gripping, but a first date may already involve enough uncertainty about when to stop being polite. Distressing material about bereavement makes the gathering heavier than a simple guessing game.

Eden Lake (2008)

Eden Lake
Movie

A couple's secluded break becomes an ordeal in which confrontation keeps making their position worse. The appeal is how relentlessly the film removes easy options, with violence that has a nasty physical cost. That is also why it can leave a film night feeling punishing rather than companionably scary. Save this particular countryside escape for someone whose appetite for bleak horror you already understand.

Possession (1981)

Possession
Movie

This older exception turns a broken marriage into furious movement, monstrous imagery and performances that seem to shake the room. Isabelle Adjani's intensity is the reason to watch, rather than a comfortable person to follow through a familiar horror plot. Sexual and bodily distress combine with emotional extremity. A shared love of maximalist cinema would be useful information to have before pressing play.
