A missing wife and her husband's increasingly unstable public image turn intimate knowledge into a source of menace. Fincher makes watching people perform a convincing relationship darkly entertaining. On an introductory date, though, the pleasure comes attached to manipulation, sexual violence references and a startlingly bloody scene. The post-film conversation can become an impromptu interrogation of what each of you considers believable.
