Two people who know each other extraordinarily well discover how efficiently that knowledge can wound. Baumbach leaves room for jokes, kindness and conflicting practical needs, which makes the divorce feel more recognisable rather than less painful. The extended arguments are the awkward attraction here. It is quite a commitment to discuss separation, custody and sacrifice before you have agreed on a second coffee.
