Industry (2020)

by tv_binger  •
Industry
TV Show
7.5/10on IMDb
First aired
The junior employees of a London investment bank have to sell confidence before they possess much security. Every apparently friendly conversation can change a colleague's value or expose a weakness. It offers Succession's appetite for advantage from a less protected starting position, with explicit sex, substance use and a relentless professional tempo. Later seasons widen the arena without making relationships any less transactional.

Billions (2016)

Billions
TV Show
8.3/10on IMDb
First aired
A hedge-fund operator and a federal prosecutor turn professional authority into an intensely personal contest. The pleasure is in the manoeuvring: favours, information and spectacularly well-timed insults become working tools. This is more openly a game of clever countermoves than Succession's family tragedy. Its swagger and dense cultural references will suit viewers who particularly miss the verbal competition.

The Righteous Gemstones (2019)

The Righteous Gemstones
TV Show
8.1/10on IMDb
First aired
Replace the media empire with a megachurch and the adult children remain desperately hungry for recognition. Danny McBride makes the family business's language of virtue collide with greed, sexual embarrassment and sibling panic. It is broader, louder and more physically outrageous than Succession. The connection is the family treating a public institution as both its entitlement and its proof of worth.

The Thick of It (2005)

The Thick of It
TV Show
8.7/10on IMDb
First aired
A government department spends much of its time trying to survive the consequences of what somebody has just said. Peter Capaldi's Malcolm Tucker turns the arrival of a phone call into a workplace emergency. There is no wealthy family here; the attraction is the same humiliating gap between public confidence and private desperation. Expect fast British political comedy and very elaborate swearing.

Halt and Catch Fire (2014)

Halt and Catch Fire
TV Show
8.4/10on IMDb
First aired
Building a technology business gives these characters a reason to need one another and endless reasons to dispute who deserves the credit. Ambition moves through friendships, marriages and partnerships rather than staying in a boardroom. Its first season leans harder on the volatile visionary; the expanding ensemble becomes the greater reward. A more emotionally generous choice when Succession's arguments about ownership were what held you.

Boss (2011)

Boss
TV Show
8.1/10on IMDb
First aired
Kelsey Grammer's Chicago mayor has accumulated enough power to make almost every relationship an instrument. A serious diagnosis makes the effort of concealing weakness increasingly consequential. The language of duty repeatedly covers a struggle to remain indispensable. This acclaimed but low-rated two-season drama is much grimmer than Succession, and its cancellation means accepting an interrupted larger story.

Trust (2018)

by tv_binger  •
Trust
TV Show
7.5/10on IMDb
First aired
The 2018 FX drama uses the Getty kidnapping to ask what money can buy and what a family can refuse to give. Donald Sutherland's patriarch makes possession and affection difficult to separate. Its dramatised account is stylised, violent and sometimes darkly funny rather than a neutral history lesson. Choose it for the collision between an immense fortune and a startlingly narrow capacity for care.

The Riches (2007)

by tv_binger  •
The Riches
TV Show
7.8/10on IMDb
First aired
A family of con artists adopts the identity of an affluent suburban household, forcing everybody to perform a new version of belonging. Wealth becomes a set of habits that can be studied, copied and disastrously misread. The outsider viewpoint makes a useful companion to the Roys' entitlement. The 2007 dramedy ran for two seasons before cancellation, so the continuing family predicament remains unfinished.

Monarca (2019)

by tv_binger  •
Monarca
TV Show
7.8/10on IMDb
First aired
Ana María returns to Mexico and finds that the family tequila empire's succession problem cannot be separated from corruption and old grievances. The Spanish-language series gives the business a particular social setting while keeping the siblings' struggle immediate. It is more melodramatic and openly thriller-driven than Succession. Two seasons were made, with unresolved business at the end.

The Legacy (2014)

by tv_binger  •
The Legacy
TV Show
7.6/10on IMDb
First aired
An artist's death leaves her adult children arguing over an inheritance that none can treat as merely financial. In the Danish drama, a house or a work of art becomes an account of who was loved, excluded or expected to cope. The scale is quieter than the Roy empire, but the family members' competing versions of entitlement are just as revealing. Start here for intimacy rather than a corporate contest.
