Speed Racer (2008)

Speed Racer
Movie
6.1/10on IMDb
Released
The races treat colour, editing and impossible space as the point, rather than apologising for resembling a cartoon. That makes the final stretch exhilarating if you accept the visual language. The broad family comedy and long running time can grate, but the Wachowskis' commitment gives the film an identity that a more tasteful adaptation might have lost.

Las Vegas ambition is rendered with such aggressive artificiality that every smile seems to be selling something. Elizabeth Berkley's full-force performance belongs to that abrasive world. The dialogue can be terrible and the sexual violence is severe; the defence is the film's rancid spectacle of self-invention, which remains more interesting than a tidy success story.

Hudson Hawk (1991)

Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello time burglaries by singing together, an absurd idea that gives the caper its own rhythm. The surrounding cartoon villains are exhausting when the joke misses, but the film's refusal to maintain action-hero dignity is also its charm. Recommend it to somebody who enjoys a crime plot behaving like a musical farce.

Last Action Hero (1993)

Last Action Hero
Movie

An action star has to discover what his invulnerability means outside the movies, which gives the explosions an unusually good comic question. Arnold Schwarzenegger's willingness to be part of the joke carries the defence. It is overstuffed and its rules wobble, yet the collision between a child's affection for spectacle and an adult's reality keeps producing worthwhile moments.
5

Van Helsing (2004)

by movie_expert  •
Van Helsing
Movie
6.1/10on IMDb

The attraction is the reckless decision to throw Dracula, Frankenstein's creature and werewolves into the same enormous gothic machine. Costumes, castles and theatrical monsters supply a pleasure independent of the busy plot. The digital action rarely gives you time to breathe; choose it when extravagant monster-movie pageantry is exactly the appetite you want fed.
6

Batman & Robin (1997)

by movie_expert  •
Batman & Robin
Movie
3.8/10on IMDb

Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze behave as if Gotham is an enormous variety show, and the neon design supports them. The puns and toy-like action can be numbing, but a defence begins with that shamelessly decorative approach. There is pleasure in a superhero world willing to be lurid, silly and visibly artificial.
7

The Core (2003)

by movie_expert  •
The Core
Movie
5.6/10on IMDb

A crew drilling towards the centre of the Earth gives capable actors a succession of gloriously impossible problems to solve. Stanley Tucci and Delroy Lindo help make expertise and professional rivalry entertaining. The science is fantasy and the disasters are broad; the useful recommendation is a warmly played team adventure for viewers who enjoy elaborate problem-solving nonsense.
8

Jupiter Ascending (2015)

by movie_expert  •
Jupiter Ascending
Movie
5.3/10on IMDb
Released
An ordinary working woman discovers that cosmic inheritance involves a bewildering amount of administration. The bureaucratic detour and the lavishly strange ruling family give this space opera pleasures its overloaded exposition cannot cancel. The romance is thin and the mythology is cumbersome, but the designs and fairy-tale appetite offer a recognisable reason to defend it.
9

John Carter (2012)

Movie

Mars becomes a place of physical movement, unlikely alliances and old-fashioned adventure, with a particularly winning creature companion in Woola. The proper nouns arrive too quickly and the opening takes time to settle. Once the film trusts its hero to move through this world, its generous pulp energy makes the expensive-failure reputation feel like an incomplete recommendation.
10

Waterworld (1995)

by movie_expert  •
Waterworld
Movie
6.3/10on IMDb

The floating settlements and battered boats make this oceanic future feel built for actual bodies, even when the story runs on familiar chase mechanics. Dennis Hopper's villain supplies a different, noisier kind of fun. The characters can be thin and the pace uneven; the case rests on tactile production design and the physical spectacle of surviving on water.
11

Godzilla (1998)

by movie_expert  •
Godzilla
Movie
5.5/10on IMDb

Roland Emmerich's giant-lizard chase turns a rain-soaked New York into a playground of tunnels, bridges and military mistakes. As a transformation of the Japanese creature it invites serious objections; as a large, ungainly city monster movie it has readable physical pleasures. The jokes and smaller-creature detour wear thin, but the nocturnal scale remains worth a look.
12

The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)

by movie_expert  •
The Chronicles of Riddick
Movie
6.6/10on IMDb

A small-scale fugitive suddenly has to navigate an empire of ornate death worshippers, an expansion so excessive that it becomes the appeal. Vin Diesel's minimalism is amusingly outnumbered by the production design. The mythology can feel dumped on the viewer, but the severe shapes, strange planets and prison escape give science-fiction maximalists a substantial defence.
13

The Electric State (2025)

by movie_expert  •
The Electric State
Movie
5.9/10on IMDb

The abandoned robot world contains the strongest argument: discarded cartoon-like machines make a technological afterlife oddly tangible. The buddy banter and familiar quest often flatten that strangeness. Defend it for specific visual inventions and the melancholy of obsolete mascots, while admitting that the 2025 film's storytelling seldom gives those images enough room to resonate.
14

TRON: Ares (2025)

by movie_expert  •
TRON: Ares
Movie
6.1/10on IMDb

Nine Inch Nails' score and the intrusion of luminous digital machinery into ordinary streets provide a forceful sensory invitation. The story's ideas about artificial life are much less developed than its surfaces. The 2025 sequel is easiest to defend as a design-and-sound experience, with the thin character work part of the bargain rather than something the spectacle cures.
15

Megalopolis (2024)

by movie_expert  •
Megalopolis
Movie
4.6/10on IMDb
Released
Francis Ford Coppola lets a city become an enormous argument about who gets to imagine its future. The abrupt tonal changes and declamatory dialogue can be maddening, yet the film's images and reckless theatricality keep creating something to discuss. The defence is curiosity about an unruly personal vision, not a claim that its politics or storytelling hold neatly together.
