Mars becomes a place of physical movement, unlikely alliances and old-fashioned adventure, with a particularly winning creature companion in Woola. The proper nouns arrive too quickly and the opening takes time to settle. Once the film trusts its hero to move through this world, its generous pulp energy makes the expensive-failure reputation feel like an incomplete recommendation.
