How to Get to Heaven from Belfast (2026)
7.3/10on IMDb
First aired
Three old friends attend a former classmate's wake and discover that their shared history has become part of a much stranger mystery. Lisa McGee's 2026 comedy-thriller carries familiar rapid exchanges into an adult friendship whose members have developed very different lives. It is the closest creative follow-up to Derry Girls, with much more menace and a longer episode format. Netflix cancelled it after one season, so some doors remain open beyond the main inquiry.

Moone Boy (2012)
8.1/10on IMDb
First aired
A boy's imaginary friend is useful company when his Irish family's priorities seem to operate by rules he cannot control. Chris O'Dowd's comedy makes the household's arguments and a child's grand interpretation of a small event equally important. The late-1980s setting gives it an affectionate period texture without making nostalgia the whole joke. It is gentler than Derry Girls, with an especially good ear for the way family members talk past one another.

The Young Offenders (2018)
8.0/10on IMDb
First aired
Conor and Jock's schemes in Cork usually make sense to them for just long enough to become somebody else's problem. The 2018 television series gives their friendship a sustaining warmth while the adults have to live with its consequences. It is a natural route from Derry Girls' lovingly exasperated family world, with more petty crime, physical comedy and crude humour. Start with the TV opening rather than confusing it with the earlier film.

London Irish (2013)
7.5/10on IMDb
First aired
Four Northern Irish friends in London keep interpreting events through a shared set of assumptions that outsiders do not necessarily recognise. Lisa McGee's six-episode 2013 comedy supplies an adult version of the gang's mutually reinforcing bad judgement. It is much boozier and less tender than Derry Girls, with the pleasure in the specificity of an argument and the speed at which a supposedly simple plan acquires consequences.

We Are Lady Parts (2021)
8.3/10on IMDb
First aired
An anxious guitarist joins a Muslim women's punk band whose members have no intention of fitting one reassuring account of who they are. Nida Manzoor makes different personalities audible in the arguments as well as the songs. The connection to Derry Girls is a group that can be gloriously ridiculous without losing its place in a complicated social world. The fantasies and performances make the comedy particularly energetic.

Big Boys (2022)
8.4/10on IMDb
First aired
A young man arriving at university after a bereavement finds an unlikely friendship that changes the shape of his new life. Jack Rooke's comedy understands the difficulty of becoming independent while still needing a family, including one you partly assemble yourself. Its completed three-series run offers Derry Girls' movement between outrageous banter and emotional precision. The later story about mental illness and loss can hit much harder than the campus setup suggests.

Chewing Gum (2015)
7.7/10on IMDb

Tracey is twenty-four and determined to catch up on experiences her religious upbringing has made both irresistible and difficult to understand. Michaela Coel gives her London estate a close network of people with competing ideas about what she should do next. It is a much more sexually explicit companion to Derry Girls' collision of family rules and urgent private wishes. The physical comedy keeps the embarrassment exuberant rather than remotely polished.

Reservation Dogs (2021)
8.3/10on IMDb
First aired
Four Indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma make plans to leave while the people around them keep changing what home means. The three-season series gives its community jokes, difficult histories and adults with lives beyond supervising the young cast. It is an especially strong route from Derry Girls' ability to let public and private worlds occupy the same scene. Grief matters throughout, with moments of surreal humour sitting naturally beside it.

Los Espookys (2019)
7.5/10on IMDb
First aired
A group of friends turn their love of horror effects into a business supplying fabricated scares. Their mostly Spanish-language world treats a peculiar request or supernatural interruption with wonderfully ordinary practical concern. The connection is the ensemble's shared comic logic: an absurd plan becomes reasonable once enough friends agree to it. HBO cancelled the series after two seasons, but its individual jobs supply plenty of distinctive, self-contained pleasures.

Girls from Ipanema (2019)
7.8/10on IMDb
First aired
Women in late-1950s Rio form alliances around music, work and lives that other people would prefer to arrange for them. The Portuguese-language drama shares Derry Girls' interest in a place becoming visible through a group's apparently private ambitions, with race and class shaping who can take a risk. This is a much more romantic, music-filled adult detour than a sitcom. Its two-season run leaves wider storylines open, including serious domestic violence.
