A writer's mountain routine follows what can be grown, gathered and cooked through the year. Yuji Nakae makes that care coexist with an attachment to his late wife that seasonal order cannot simply tidy away. A good choice for slower viewing in which handling ingredients and noticing weather count as events. Its monastic food traditions belong to this character's history, rather than a universal recipe for calm.

An essayist, he finds peace in his mountain life. His routine is pleasantly disturbed by occasional visits from Machiko, his editor and love interest, as he struggles to let go of his late wife's ashes.
