The Alien films can form a powerful two-film progression from solitary survival to chosen responsibility. James Cameron gives Ripley's experience an emotional destination as well as a larger action scale. Alien 3 has an austere case of its own, yet its starting position deliberately dismantles the particular closure this film earns.

Ripley, the sole survivor of the Nostromo's deadly encounter with the monstrous Alien, returns to Earth after drifting through space in hypersleep for 57 years. Although her story is initially met with skepticism, she agrees to accompany a team of Colonial Marines back to LV-426.
