Jack Sparrow works beautifully when other people's relatively straightforward aims keep colliding with his improvisation. The first Pirates film gives the comic unpredictability a clear adventure to disrupt. Later mythology can be entertainingly excessive, but stopping here preserves the balance before the supporting rogue has to carry so much franchise machinery.
