A hostile landscape becomes a place Mark Watney can study, work in and briefly make habitable. Ridley Scott keeps the practical tasks legible, with Matt Damon's humour preventing the distance from becoming emotionally blank. Pick it for the pleasure of discovering that a new problem can be broken into smaller ones. It is an optimistic fictional survival adventure, with its science adapted to dramatic needs.
